Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt

Sophie's World is in its "closed-door" phase... Sophie is apparently approaching the next stage of her life - establishing a sense of self. Usually, this occurs in toddlers between 18 mths and 3 yrs, but Sophie seems to be more advanced than other children. Ever since she started "walking", she has been showing signs of stubborn insistence and temper tantrum. She expresses her thoughts, wants, needs the best she can (even though we cannot understand her... resulting in more frustrations in her).

The primary challenge in this stage is to ensure that she develops a healthy sense of autonomy and not a sense of shame and doubt, as she tries to become an independent self (as opposed to being a part of me). I have to make sure I help her to become self-confident and empower her to become independent. Now, I am totally not ready for her to be like this... blatantly shaking her head to express resistence to daily routine, such as sleeping and eating... she even rejects my offer to carry her when she has more attractive alternative like wheeling around in her walker.

The result - an extremely tired and frustrated mama who needs to read up more about handling toddlers. Every single day is a battle and power struggle with her... starting with breakfast and ending with sleep at night. My goodness, Sophie is a good half a year ahead of me... Got to catch up with her... fast!
