Sydney, Australia Day 2

We had a good night’s rest and we were up and ready to go out early in the morning to do some exploring in Sydney, or at least around the iconic areas. We fed the kids some simple breakfast before we headed out, just in case we could not find any suitable place to eat. We took a leisurely walk to Circular Quay and found ourselves at Rossini Café for a proper breakfast.

It was the kind of breakfast I truly enjoyed. Papa ordered himself bacon and eggs while I tried the house special (which I have forgotten the fanciful name, unfortunately). All I could remember was the deliciously sweet pastry and aromatic hot chocolate. We took our time at the restaurant - fiddling with Sophie’s new camera, people watching and feeling relaxed and quite happy. I thought we could do more of such family breakfasts back in Singapore. For me, breakfast is sacred. I love the idea of waking up to see all my loved ones gathered at the table, enjoying their first meal of the day.

After filling our stomach, we headed off to explore the area a little. From where we were, we could catch a good view of the Harbour Bridge, also fondly known as ‘coat hanger’. We did not have any intention to actually get across the bridge although Sophie was quite keen. We thought it looked best from far so we walked towards the Sydney Opera House instead. Sadly, but without fail, I would think of Finding Nemo whenever I think of Sydney Opera House. Other than that, the beautiful architecture does not really appeal to me.

Papa offered to watch Alfee and our stroller at the foot of the stairs while Sophie and I went up to take a closer look around. Again we could have took a guided tour inside but I knew it would bore Sophie to tears (or mischief) so we just fooled around with our camera a bit. It was good because I managed to capture some good shots of her. There is something about stairs and kids that I can never quite comprehend. Sophie just enjoyed climbing up and down the stairs, exhausting herself (and me obviously). We (or at least I) went up and down a couple of times before reuniting with Papa and Alfee.

We pressed on, hoping to catch a bit more before it grew dark fairly early at this time of the year. We came to the Royal Botanic Gardens. Sophie made a friend here. Her mum was a Singapore who married an Aussie. They were having a great time playing catching. I love the feeling of being close to nature without the fatigue, sweat and mozzies. I mean, our Botanic Gardens is great and huge but it is too hot and humid to feel refreshed after a stroll. This place is less impressive yet I enjoyed the walk. Of course it helped that we took a mini train ride around the place instead of actually walking on foot. The driver was also a guide, explaining to us the history and species found there. But we were not really listening, sorry!

After that, Sophie volunteered to sit in her stroller (very rare). It seemed like she had finally realised that she could rest and nap in her stroller when she was tired. She did not need admit that she was sleepy, she just had to say she wanted to sit in her stroller. It was moments before she fell fast asleep. We took the opportunity to walk to The Rocks. I cannot explain, but the place did not seem to leave much of an impression on me at all. We stopped at Guylian, a nice café for some coffee and pastry. I could get used to such a lifestyle!

I wanted Sophie to have at least one meal of porridge when we were in Sydney. So I cooked porridge for everyone in the evening the moment we reached our serviced apartment. Papa loved it (maybe very hungry) although Sophie was not too keen. She had her eyes only on the cupcakes from a shop near our serviced apartment. I would love to see her eat more, but she only cleaned the cream on the top. Anyhow, that marked the end of our second day in Sydney.

Here are some pictures from Sophie's camera…
