About one or two months ago, I started teaching Sophie to stack blocks. I had to show her step-by-step:
1. focus on 2 blocks on the table
2. pick up 1 block
3. place it over the other block
4. release fingers
5. clap (optional)
6. adjust (also optional)
She did not quite pick up the skill until a couple of days ago. I realised that I should have made the task easier for her by putting only 2 blocks on the table. Also she could focus better if there were nothing else on the table to distract her. Breaking down the task into steps (comprising skills she has already learnt) definitely helped. Sophie is very motivated by our encouragement and we love to celebrate her accomplishment, however small they might be. YEAH!!! Next skill to be learnt will be hammering...
