Ah Mah would probably scream and protest if she ever saw Sophie playing with a bathtub of water. I was never allowed to play with water as a child because it was “dangerous”. The beach was “forbidden” as well because the sand was “dirty”. Thus, it is no surprise that I am not much of a swimmer now. I hope Sophie would never be like me. She should be given the opportunity to enjoy the beach and water, especially since Singapore is surrounded by sea water. For that, I rely on Papa to make it happen in the new future… For now, I will continue to let her do water play and sensory tubs.
Sophie had come up with the game herself and I built on her idea in hope that she would soon be able to do sorting using the ice-tray. So far, her colour discrimination is atrocious, but she cannot care less. After watching “Harold and the Purple Crayon”, she can say and recognise “purple” and it has become her favourite colour. I wonder if “Clifford” or “Elmo” is responsible for her saying “red”.
I left Sophie alone with her Playdoh to make her the letters “E” and “e” with jumping clay. When I found her fiddling with the Playdoh and looking restless, I decided to make her a silver elephant. She was very happy and compared it to the “elephant” in the letter “E”. Nowadays, Sophie will put two similar objects close together and say, “me” to indicate that they are the same.
