Letter Of The Week - "L" For Lion

Singapore will be celebrating her 44th National Day on August 9 (Sunday) so I wanted to somehow make a "lion" for our "lion city" (also because it is Sophie's favourite animal). Thus, the letter of the week is conveniently "L".

I had some leftover collage materials and I did not want to keep them. So, I cut them into strips and coloured them brown with markers. I arranged them into a circle and put the "lion" in place just to show Sophie what she would be making. I realised that if she knew what she would be making, she would be more attentive and willing to work on the task...

It did not quite happen that way today... unfortunately. But we still managed to finish painting the "L" with lots of coaxing and tears. She wailed when I took her green paint away and replaced it with yellow paint for the "lion" (which she thought was a bear!)

When I worked on the "mane" and attempted to "lion-ised" the "bear", I let Sophie paint with the rest of the yellow paint. To my surprise, she actually brushed some yellow paint on the paper and shouted "(ba)nana" happily. My baby just painted a banana! Wow, I was so happy that she was trying to make sense of her own art.

I remember Papa once mentioned that Sophie was trying to draw but she lacked the motor skills. I did not take him seriously because I thought she was much too young to create meaningful visual representation of her perception. But I guess I was wrong. Yesterday, we were having lunch at Swenson when she started drawing and naming everything she drew. We could not understand her but she was very persistent for our acknowledgement.

End Product - "L" For Lion
