Sandpaper Art

Today, I wanted to let Sophie draw on a rough surface (sandpaper) for a change. I thought she might like the effect since she seemed to like drawing on black construction paper the other day. Initially I had wanted to make numbers and letters with the black sandpaper but I gave up after making just 10 numbers. It was realy a lot of hard work! So, I decided to use it for something else until I have time to continue with the alphabet.

While I was gathering the crayons, Sophie reached for the crayons on the table and started drawing behind my back! I quickly took video clips of her in action… Although I was tickled by her enthusiasm, I had to stop her because the crayons were NOT the washable kind! And she was drawing the table!

Once Sophie was proper seated, her desire to draw diminished significantly. She was more interested in the crayons. Maybe I should have left her standing by the table!

It did not help when the paper wrapper around the crayons kept slipping off. Soon, Sophie treated that as a game by itself. Sometimes, I am amazed by her creative play.

Finally, Sophie could concentrate on drawing, but that was after I ripped off all the paper wrappers. The effect was quite nice.

I have done it with older children before (many years ago) and they loved it too. I remembered calling it “cave art” and using brown sandpaper instead. We joined pieces of sandpaper and stuck them onto the wall. I even taught them some art history and showed them how to use their oil pastels to achieve the effects. The effect was quite beautiful… I did it with black sandpaper again with younger children and they turned out great too. Good old days…
