We made a sensory jar today. I'm not so sure about Alfee but I know Sophie is a tensed up child with lots of worries. She needs a good sensory diet to provide her with varied sensory inputs. These sensory jars are filled up with rice, barley and some trinkets and toys. The kids have to turn and manipulate the jar to reveal the objects inside. The activity is soothing and calming for the kids and it provides a moment for them to stay focused.
Then we were off to do some reading together. It was really fun to see how two rowdy kids quieten down suddenly when there are books around. Sophie would automatically shut herself off from others and really enter the imaginary realm of adventure and make believe. Alfee would follow suit. Occasionally, Sophie would also read to her brother and I would watch with pure delight.
Soon, Alfee lost interest and Sophie started teaching him about the Alphabet, using a puzzle. Needless to say, he wasn't too keen to stay still and fix a puzzle that he could barely make sense of. Instead, he wanted his sister to jump and climb around.
We also tried to learn some Chinese vocabulary together. I thought Alfee would be more willing to learn if Sophie was there. As it turned out, he really sat there much longer and repeat what Sophie said. It was so funny...
