Show & Tell Preparation

Sophie: ... Mummy... mother is not an occupation, what are you? Like Papa works in bank... you?
Me: ... I'm a ... so u say 'my mother is a stay at home mum...'
Sophie: (looked disappointed) Oh...
Me: ... erm.. and 'She used to be a teacher in a primary school'
Sophie: (wide eyed, jaws dropped) You were a teacher??!!
Me: ... Er.. yes?
(awkward silence)

I suppose we never really talked about my past and history with Sophie. Somehow, I just don't feel comfortable. Some time ago, Sophie told me she wanted to be a mummy when she grows up. Some time late, she came back from school declaring that 'mummy' wasn't an occupation and she had to be something else. So, she chose to be a teacher. That literally freaked me out even though I tried to keep calm. I remember a conversation I had with my close friend when I was a teenager. I confessed that all I ever wanted was to be a mother, not some highflyer sort of professionals. She didn't laugh at me or talk me down, instead she said the world needed people like me. She, however, wanted to work in the corporate world, earn big bucks and make a name for herself. Now, my daughter said the same thing... and changed her mind for the path I used to tread. I guess I should start telling her my past... The truth is I don't like my past very much and I don't want her to go anywhere near where I have been.
