Sophie came home and ranted on and on about a magic trick her friend did at school. It was a simple trick and she knew exactly how it was done. Her friend placed a paper clip on a cardboard and moved it with a magnet underneath. Yet, she was still fascinated. So, I took the opportunity to give her a quick lesson on magnets and magnetism.
After that, she showed Alfee how to draw dinosaurs and drew a couple more pictures for him. Sometimes she impressed me with her drawings but sometimes I really wonder if she really did it herself. I think she copies images she has seen or refers to them as she draws.
At bedtime, I took out the chapter books I had borrowed from the library at Nex for Sophie. The mother of her ballet classmate introduced them to me and insisted Sophie should read them. Her daughter is a year older and she found these books very manageable for her. Honestly, I wash't very keen to borrow but I did because I couldn't reject her. Sophie flipped through the books and she declared she didn't want to read them. I was annoyed and asked her why. She promptly explained that they were too easy. That got me a little riled up... I mean, how could these chapter books be too easy? They are simple but they are meant for early readers like herself. Angered, I told her to read one aloud, just to prove she could read. And to my surprise, she really did! Despite the number of pages, the words are really simple and easy to sound out. The story is mundane and not very imaginative to her liking. In fact, I suspect that she got the overall story just by flipping through earlier.
Your girl is so clever!
ReplyDeleteShe's very keen on reading but not so interested in other activities like sports.
