Tuckshop Day

Every year, Cherrybrook would organize 'Tuckshop Day' for the children. Parents were invited to set up mainly food stalls and let the children practice buying food from vendors. All the food were portioned appropriately and priced at 10-20 cents per serving. I deliberately let Alfee attend Cherrytots on Wednesday so that he could join in the fun. Alas, all he could eat was popcorn while other other tots  chomped at the chicken wings, muffins and beehoon.

Sophie : I want to buy a sausage...
Parent : Okay, that would be 20 ct please...
Sophie : (hesitated) I only have 10 ct...
Parent : Oh... (cont'd when Sophie didn't move along) let me see what you have in your purse?
(Sophie showed her the contents in her purse... many many 10 cent coins but no 20 cent coin at all)

I was there and I witnessed the exchange. The parent and I both laughed at Sophie's child-like interpretation. In a way, she was right. She knew she has got money to buy the sausage but she couldn't give the parent what she had asked for. When I related the incident to Papa, he uttered wisely, ''.... that's why they needed 'Tuckshop Day'..."

Sophie, of course, got her sausage at last. I'm really proud that she didn't spend everything in her purse. She bought only what she liked to eat and she didn't buy more than she could finish. What a sensible little girl!
