So far I have done 10.5 hours of PV. I hope to fulfil my 40 hours by the end of this year. Personally, I think this whole business of P1 Registration is horribly wrong. Yet I can't help but to be sucked into it... with PV for a start. And for the record, I'm not even enrolling the kids in any elite or branded school.
When I was teaching, I was assigned a parent volunteer to help me create a web based resource for art teachers. Although it was a short collaboration, I felt that we had achieved some good progress and we both benefited. There was no time wasted, we came in and went straight into it after some initial ice breaking and training. There was no leak of confidential information and we work on Saturdays when traffic was minimal.
As a parent volunteer now, I was expecting nothing less. I'm relatively task oriented and I can work independently. However, I was assigned mundane office tasks and traffic warden duties. I don't mind being the lollipop lady since they really lack manpower in the morning and children's safety is a huge concern. However, I really feel that office tasks should never be done by parents (outsiders or non-staff). I don't have any access to documents or confidential information, but I have seen or heard a little too much to be right. Of course, those tasks are also actually part of the paid work of the office staff.
What I would really like to volunteer is family education related work. I think parents should form support groups and organise talks, workshops, and activities to promote better parenting and family life. I think we should perform the supportive role and do work that indirectly benefits the school so that the staff can do their job more effectively. In my opinion, parent volunteers should not be doing the paid work of staff for them. And most definitely, personal information of the staff and pupils must be protected and confidential.
But of course, this is just my humble opinion. And we are all just part of this system of madness.
