Lifecycle Of A Dragonfly

At Ecogarden (Singapore Science Centre), we came across a pond and the guide gave us a brief introduction of the plants and animals in the pond community. And the dragonfly nymph was one of the exhibit shown. Unfortunately, the explanation was scandalously brief and simplified so I doubt the impression lasted longer than a few moments.

I thought it would be good to teach Sophie about the lifecycle of a dragonfly. As it turns out, I learnt a bit about dragonflies as well. I'm always hoping to engage her in the learning of science as early as possible. However, we never really go into lap books and projects. I blame it on her naps and enrichment activities but deep down, I know I'm plain lazy and it takes too much effort to get her focused and interested.

I had first thought of printing some notes and pictures for Sophie, but I can't seem to get my printer to work properly. The colours were off and I didn't have time to figure out how to do this on the Mac. So, I did a search on YouTube and found a few really cool video clips on the lifecycle of dragonflies. To save myself from making choices, I showed them all to Sophie.

I love YouTube for this! All the wonderful resources (minus the crap) that we can use as teaching aids. Who need lousy, inaccurate drawings when we can show video clips of the whole process? Imagine the stuff we have missed out in our education.

Still life shots are great as well. Sophie has seen many dragonflies at the Botanic Gardens but they were too far away and too fast for her to have a good look. I'm not expecting her to identify (Cos I can't either) them, but I hope she learn by looking at real pictures and not drawings.

There are so many different types of dragonflies and they look so gorgeous with their rainbow of colours. I hope my kids would love and appreciate nature.
