Sophie's Textile Play

When Sophie saw the Dough Station setup last evening, she was enticed and eager to try out the Moon Dough. But knowing that I would not allow her near the station during dinnertime, she asked very sweetly and politely if I would let her play after school today. Of course... thats's exactly what I would love to see happen! And true enough, she went straight to the station after her school and nap. Unlike Alfee, she was very meticulous in her manipulation and play. I could leave her alone to explore although I had to help her once in a while.

Before bedtime, I let her try the Ruff's House Teaching Tactile Set I bought from Starry Mummy. My previous attempt wasn't very successful with both kids trying to rip Ruff apart. They were so taken by the adorable puppy that they couldn't care less about the activity. After a few weeks, they now seem less excited about the learning aid. I started with Sophie because I thought she's a very visual person and this could train her to use other senses as well.

But to my surprise, that was a breeze for her. I started with 5 pairs of bones, putting one of each pair in the dog house. I would give her one bone and she had to pick out the corresponding one from the dog house without looking. She was so quick and accurate that I thought she was cheating. I had to get her to shut her eyes as well. Then I made it harder by putting another 5 bones into the dog house. Again she did it without much difficulty. I also noticed she played by elimination as well. She would pick out the easy ones (very obvious textile characteristics) first and then leave the difficult ones to the last.

In other to check if it is really that easy, I had a go at the game too! I was horrified that I wasn't much faster than her. In fact, I was slow! I felt the bone thoroughly and compared their textiles before I was confident enough to pick any out. I wonder how Alfee would fare...
